Today's Update will be short because the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is holding our Annual Meeting today and tomorrow. Yesterday we sent a letter to Senator Kohl and Senator Feingold urging them to vote for cloture on America’s Climate Security Act. We mentioned that the Wisconsin League has recently completed a state study on Energy Policy, and our membership agreed that global climate change is one of the most serious threats to the environment, health and economy of our nation and our world. This week, the U.S. Senate began debate on historic legislation that would provide America with the opportunity to transition to a clean-energy economy. Late Wednesday night, Senate Majority Leader Reid moved to stop the obstructionist tactics that are blocking action on the legislation by filing for cloture. This procedural motion requires the support of 60 Senators in order to move ahead, and the vote on cloture will likely come on Friday morning, June 6. LWVUS is urging all Leagues and League members to put pressure on the Senate to move ahead on this important legislation. At the state level, we were shocked to learn that the Legislature quietly adjourned the 2007-2008 session, weeks ahead of the last session, without acting on Campaign Finance Reform. The Senate did final adjournment at the end of the day May 13, after meeting on the budget repair bill. The Assembly followed suit on May 14 and moved to final adjournment after they finished with the Great Lakes Compact special session. For details from Common Cause in Wisconsin, click here.
