The Basics: The Poll Worker Recritment Project addresses the ongoing concern of an understaffed election day workforce in Wisoconsin. The League is encouraging volunteers - especially students and members of communities of color - to work at the polls. Our hope is to create a more diverse and representative group of poll workers, at the same time fostering a more diverse and representative group of voters.
Working at the polls is easy! Poll workers are fully trained by municipal clerks and are compensated for both their training and election day work. Many employers are supportive of employees who need time off to work at the polls, and many polling places can be staffed in flexible shifts. Students as young as 16 years old may work at the polls with good grades and the permission of their parents and their school. Students can be compensated or may count election day as community service for courses or student organizations. To volunteer as a poll worker, contact your local clerk. A full listing of local clerks can be found here, or you may contact the League for more information. Local clerks will have details on training sessions and compensation. To work at the polls, you must be an eligable voter (or a student). Project Scope: The Poll Worker Recruitment Project will begin in Madison for the Spring 2007 elections. The Wisconsin League will coordinate with our 22 local Leagues and members around the state to expand the project in time for the Fall 2008 presidential election cycle. To get invovled now, please contact the state League office. Materials:
